Planning: Locations/Health and Safety

Starting Scene:
  • The first scene is set in a bedroom. One of our group members recently moved into a local flat, so we will use this location for this and the ending scenes. We will not need to acquire permission to film here due to this. This scene will be shot in daytime, but apart from that there is no exact timing required, as it takes place indoors.
Second and Third Scenes:
  • This will consist of the band members coming into shot from the side of a pub, and then entering, with the door closing behind them. For this scene we need a relatively quiet pub that has space for all our filming equipment and team. Once the final location for this scene is decided upon, we need to gain permission from the owner and organize a time to film. We will need to film during the late evening around 5-6 pm, for continuity if any windows are in shot. This scene will include a drinking montage, so we will need to make sure we have enough money to pay for the various beverages.
 Fourth Scene (Performance):
  • During the pub drinking scene we will cut to a performance shot, which will take place outside of the pub. This will be filmed at dusk in a local side-street or alleyway, with nearby streetlamps for lighting.  For this scene we will only need permission if there are people outside.
Fifth Scene:
  •  In this scene, the band members will leave the pub through the front doors. After walking out of the shot, they will then be shown walking down alleyways and side streets as they stumble home. There will also be a short argument between the group members, so if there is any physical action we will have to take care that no-one is actually injured. As with the previous scene, we do not need specific permission for this but will still need to take passers-by into account.
Sixth Scene (Performance):
  •  This performance scene will take place within the same alleyway as the previous one. Again, we will only need permission from passers-by.
Final Scene:
  • During the final scene, the actor from the first scene will stumble through the front door of the flat, go up the stairs and into the bedroom,  where they will collapse on the bed. After this the alarm clock will go off, displaying 6:00 am. This closing shot can in fact be recycled for the first scene. As stated above, we will not need permission to film here.

During all scenes, any electrical cables used will present trip hazards. This will be especially true during the dark outside scenes, so it will have to be made clear where any cables are to prevent potential injury.

Planning: Choreography

The performance sections are the easiest to choreograph, as it can be improvised to some extent- the performers will be 'rocking out', playing their intruments and moving their bodies in time to the beat.

The narrative sections are also fairly simple in the required actions. the bedroom scene , a performer will be awoken by an alarm clock, which he will slap at sleepily a few times, until it is successfully turned off. He will wince at the sulnight, turn away from it, and attempt to bury himself in the bedsheets, groaning.

The pub scenes will be as follows: First, the band members will enter the pub. There will be a few shots of the performers drinking happily, though care must be taken in the montage so that although it is implied that all drink, we don't actually need any underage performers doing so. Following this, they will leave the pub, clearly drunk.

In the next performance section, there will be a small fight/argument scene between the band members. All performers in this part will be stumbling about a bit, clearly indicating they are drunk. after this is resolved, he band members will walk away (still effecting a drunken body laguage). They will enter homes, and we follow the same performer from the beginning as he more or less collapses into bed.

Time management update

We're falling behind a bit on planning. Ideally, we would be beginning filming this week, but that seems unlikely to happen now, as we are still pulling together the last parts of the planning process. One of our group members has been late on his work, and that has contributed to the delay. We areslowly working through this, however. hopefully, we should be ready to film next week.

Planning: Lighting and Colour

Lighting: We will use three main lighting setups: First, a harsh brightness for the 'morning scene', to emphasise the pain of a hangover. The pub scenes will have a more warm lighting to them, which will reflect the general mood. Finally, in the rest of the narrative and the performance shots, we will use streetlights as a form of urban spotlights in an otherwise mostly dark environment. The resulting effect will hopefully be similar to some of the shots in 'Like I'm Gonna Lose You'. To just rely on urban nighttime lighting, and whatever ambient light there is from houses and the sky, will hopefully provide a degree of realism to the scene. The dark environment will symbolise the situation of the group, alone and in a bad way.

Colour: In the pub shots, to emphasise the mood, the warm lighting will be accompanied by warm oranges and yellows (like the colour of the beer, for example). Other bright colours may also be employed, perhaps in the outfits of the performers- A Sky Full Of Stars is a good example of how bright colours can reflect and amplify the mood of a song. Likewise, the morning scene shots will perhaps be whited out a little, made pale to again exaggerate the harsh white light. This colouring could also emphasise the cold harshness of reality, which the teen has now returned to after his drunken escapade the night before.

In the darker, outside scenes, the lighting will be lower, hopefully making the previously bright costume colours seem a bit dull. This will symbolise the dishevelled state the group enter as the night progresses.

music video of the week #3

I chose this Japanese video for the fact that it defies much of the conventions found here in the west, and yet still is an interesting and fitting video. For starters, it is animated, and has no lypsynching- it is entirely narrative/conceptual based. The visuals and pacing of the video still match the music and lyrics, though, and amplify them. For example, the visuals clearly relfect the tone of the music, whether it is realtively calm or more enrgetic- at one point, a calm interlude is reflected by a less intensive night-time scene.

Planning: Costume and Props

Costume: The outfits will all be comprised of casual clothing- jeans, t-shirts, maybe hoodies. In short, generic clothing appropriate for the age group. There will definitely be no expensive clothes, or high-profile brands (at least, nothing visibly recognizable).

The group shot used as the background in their YouTube audio tracks demonstrates that this would fit in with the star image they have already created for themselves. As such, this costume choice will help to create continuity and coherence with the prior brand identity.

Hair: No fancy or expensive hairdos. The performers should be relatable, and so their appearances must be identifiable as regular people for their age group. Additionally, the opening shot will require a 'bed hair' look.

Make-up: None, or at least very little, as we intend to present a fairly realistic portrayal of the performers as individuals. They don't need perfect appearances, not as part of their star image, nor as part of the songs visuals- a song about getting drunk does not invoke images of pristine appearances, after all.

Props: A key set of props will be glasses, filled with an alcoholic substance. These will appear in narrative sections of the video, clearly illustrating the lines related to drinking. Other props needed will be a set of instruments for the performance-based sections of the video. We will also need an alarm clock for usage in the opening shots.

Audience Profile

Our target audience, due to the alcohol-related nature and other themes of the song, will be males aged around 16-25. They therefore fall predominantly into the E demographic (though there may be some D's), as the majority of that age group will either be in higher education or apprenticeships.

Although the specific race and sexuality of a person is unimportant here, it should be noted that the target audience is part of Western culture. Also, people in their demographic group tend to have little disposable income. As such, the typical target audience member will likely have a 'Struggler', 'Explorer', or 'Rebel' psychographic profile. They will have a musical interest in Indie Rock, and will buy CDs in this genre. They will be loyal to their favourite brands and artists. They will not, however, refuse to switch to a cheaper alternative of many products, due to their low income. Their buying habits will likewise be sparse outside of the necessities, with Music and Alcohol being two of the other major purchase types.

Video idea summary

Our video will primarily be composed of narrative-based shots inter-spaced with performance sections. The narrative will follow the band on a night out as they steadily get drunk, and find the experience less than entirely enjoyable. There will be a few introductory shots similar to that of 'Gunga Din', without music. As the drunkenness sets in, we will introduce editing effects to reflect this visually.

Narrative structure

Exposition: A band member (possibly the singer) wakes up in bed, alarm clock showing 6:00 am. He gets up, groaning, and stumbles out of bed. It's clear he has a bad hangover.

Rising action: 8 or 9 hours earlier. The band members head into a pub, and start drinking. After getting completely drunk, the group stumbles out into the night.

Climax: In the street, the group encounters unconscious drunks and end up in a short drunken street fight with another man.

Falling action: After the fight is resolved, the group continues on their way. They split up, each heading to his own home, and we follow the singer(?) to his house.

Denoument: The singer (?) manages to clamber into his bed, and falls asleep. The final shot is of the alarm going off, at 6:00 am.

Music Video of the week #2

This video demonstrates how lighting can be used to help create mood in a video- the darkness strengthens the tone of the song, and what little light there is makes you focus instantly and completely on whatever it is illuminating, like the singers.

Time Management update #1

Most of the initial planning for the video has been completed. I do still need to type up an Audience profile, but as I have already done one as part of the Pitch, I believe this will be a short task. The only other major thing left to do is to create the storyboards, video synopsis, and any other related pieces of planning. Audience feedback for the pitch has been collected, and will be posted shortly.
